Super stoked to hear about Coma Music Magazine’s upcoming covers compilation – industrial versions of hair metal songs [disc 1] and New Wave [disc 2].
Now, it’s always been kosher to like New Wave, but naturally it’s been about 25 years since it was OK to admit to liking hair metal.
Fuck it. I was hiding Faster Pussycat and LA Guns and Great White CDs from my mother’s snooping Catholic ears long before I know who Skinny Puppy was.
In fact, if you want to understand why I write the way I write, a crucial part of that puzzle is knowing that I spent my formative years loving stuff like this:
And this:
And this:
And especially this:
Now, of course I grew to love harsh electronics, but when I was little, I wanted to be just like Taime Down when I grew up: obnoxious, rude, singing shit that would horrify my mother [though by the time I put out my first album, my mother had either lightened up or developed selective hearing when it came to my lyrics].
Of course there was Axl Rose too, and all the rest of them too, but for whatever reason, I always especially loved that bluesy roadhouse vibe mixed with the sleaziest of sleaze rock lyrics that made up Faster Pussycat’s sound. Hooky as hell, too, and give me the don’t-give-a-fuck arrogance of a band like Faster Pussycat over the holier-than-thou PC attitudes so common in bands nowadays.
So while I will also submit a New Wave cover, and I haven’t decided exactly which Faster Pussycat song I’m going to do, I can assure you it’ll be one of the four I just posted above. Hopefully my stuff gets picked for the compilation, of course it’ll be months before we know since the deadline’s not til October 1, 2012.
